What Are the Merits of Nationalism? A Debate

Nationalism: You hear the term a lot these days. Nationalist movements have emerged as powerful forces in the United States and around the world.

But what is nationalism?

Is it simply love of country, or does it mean something more? Is it a tribalistic reaction to globalization? Is it a force for good, by fostering national unity? Or does it do more harm, by undermining international cooperation?

In this debate, two prominent scholars tackle these and many other questions.

Arguing for the merits of nationalism is Hillsdale professor and research fellow David Azerrad. Taking the other side is Johns Hopkins professor and author Yascha Mounk.

This event, recorded December 11, 2020, is part of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s debate series with Wheaton College in Massachusetts, made possible by the generous support of the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation.
