The President’s Bracket

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is upon us again, and as President Obama said “my March Madness bracket isn’t going to fill itself out. Although if it did, it would certainly save me the hassle of spending countless sleepless nights in front of the Situation Room TV.” Ok, so he didn’t say that last part, but it echoes my own sentiment as well as that of countless others who fill out a bracket every year only to see it crumpled up in the trash by the end of the first round. But, as the brave leader of the free world, the President has to teach Americans that it’s alright to make mistakes.  Just as long as they can joke to the press about them.  So, without further ado, here are the President’s torunament picks:

As a Michigan fan, I must say that I was pleased with the President picking the Wolverines to advance to the Elite Eight. That’s certainly farther than I expect them to go. While he does have some first round upsets, with Minnesota over UCLA, Belmont over New Mexico, and either BSU of La Selle over Arizona, he plays it fairly safe. Paying homage to the swing states, President Obama has Florida and Ohio State in the Final Four along with Indiana and Louisville. He picked the Hoosiers to go all the way because “this is Indiana’s year.” So, not the most interesting bracket, but enough to have a good showing in the White House March Madness pool.

Barack and friends know that it all comes down to free throws. Barack and friends know that it all comes down to free throws.

Unfortunately, not everyone on Capitol Hill is thrilled with Obama’s bracket. And no, it’s not because he has Georgetown losing to Florida in the Sweet Sixteen.  Many do not feel that the President should be focused on college basketball when this country is in the midst of a financial crisis. A new GOP video came up with the catchy “Clutch on the Brackets, Late on the Budget” slogan.  Texas Rep. Pete Sessions tweeted that “March Madness is when the president takes his brackets more seriously than the national budget.” House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy said something to the same effect in an interview with Greta van Susteren. Clearly, they’re all just jealous that they weren’t invited to the annual White House March Madness party. I hear Nancy Pelosi is making her famous cheese dip.
