Largely because of the anti-intellectualism rampant in the 1950s, which was driving students away from school, educators since then have been insisting that continued schooling translates into higher lifetime earnings. There are data that support this, of course, and they are frequently referred to in an attempt to convince young people to stay in school. Thus educators themselves have planted the seeds for the current misconceptions ruling over the understanding of university education. . . .
