Janet had kept the world’s first days for us:
cut glass; oak; maple; books of chivalry;
and once she asked, “Would you knights like peach pie?”      

School was Miss Norton: only sweet demand     
could wake a child to what it was to sing;
and straight Miss Norton never would go bent.
