Thomas A. Spragens Jr. is professor of political science at Duke University. His publications include The Irony of Liberal Reason, Reason and Democracy, and The Politics of Motion: The World of Thomas Hobbes. His most recent book, Civic Liberalism: Reflections on Our emocratic Ideals, was awarded the Elaine and David Spitz Book Prize for 2001.
