Dr. Lanier contributed “A Critique of the Philosophy of Progress” to the Southern Agrarian manifesto I’ll Take My Stand: The South and the Agrarian Tradition (Harper & Brothers, 1930). He was a member of the psychology department at Vanderbilt University during the 1930s and later became the provost of the University of Illinois.
