After more than a half-century of trying, the European enterprise, the effort “to construct Europe,” has not succeeded in overcoming our old nations. And nobody expects it will succeed any time soon. Yet we certainly no longer define ourselves as belonging to Christian nations, for we aim at a limitless European empire of universal fellow-feeling. But do Christianity and the nation, in fact, go hand in hand?
