Given present understandings it is hard to understand why churches’ refusing to marry same-sex couples or hire active homosexuals to teach moral theology is more protected by the First Amendment than Indian tribes’ use of peyote in their rituals. Isn’t pervasive homophobia worse than sporadic drug use?
