At ISI’s fifteenth annual Gala for Western Civilization at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., you and hundreds of other ISI friends and supporters will hear from three influential conservative thinkers and leaders:

  • Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College, who will give the keynote address
  • Diana Davis Spencer, Executive Chairman of the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, who will receive ISI’s Charles H. Hoeflich Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Glenn C. Loury, Merton P. Stoltz Professor of the Social Sciences at Brown University, who will receive ISI’s Faculty Award

About the Speakers and Honorees

Larry P. Arnn (Keynote Speaker)

Larry P. Arnn is the president of Hillsdale College, where he is also a professor of politics and history. Under his leadership, Hillsdale has reached millions of people through its online courses and its monthly speech digest, Imprimis. Recently he served as chairman of the 1776 Commission. An ISI alumnus, Dr. Arnn received ISI’s Richard M. Weaver Fellowship when he was at the Claremont Graduate School, where he earned his PhD in government. He also studied at Oxford, where he served as director of research for Sir Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill. From 1985 to 2000, Dr. Arnn served as president of the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy. He is a recipient of the prestigious Bradley Prize for his “scholarship and leadership” and for helping “build Hillsdale College into the model of classical liberal arts education.”

Diana Davis Spencer
Diana Davis Spencer (Lifetime Achievement Award Winner)

Diana Davis Spencer is executive chairman of the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, which is dedicated to America’s founding principles, our freedoms, and the entrepreneurial spirit. As an activist, she has effected change across multiple sectors, including by helping implement the Massachusetts Bottle Bill and by advocating for legislation that improved education opportunities for special-needs children. She is also an accomplished journalist and author who wrote for numerous local and national publications. A leader in the philanthropic community, she sits on the board of directors for several organizations.

Glenn Loury on Conservative Conversations with ISI
Glenn C. Loury (Faculty Award Winner)

Glenn C. Loury is the Merton P. Stoltz Professor of the Social Sciences and Professor of Economics at Brown University. Previously he taught at Harvard University, Boston University, the University of Michigan, and Northwestern University. Loury earned his PhD in economics from MIT. As an academic economist, he has received a number of honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Carnegie Endowment Scholarship, and he has been elected vice president of the American Economics Association. Loury has also established himself as a prominent social critic and public intellectual, writing mainly on the themes of racial inequality and social policy. He has published several book and hundreds of essays and reviews. An in-demand speaker, Professor Loury is the host of the podcast The Glenn Show.
