This seminar is devoted one of the greatest works in the History of American Politics, Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Written by Himself. This book is at once a damning indictment of American Slavery and an inspiring tribute to the power of the human soul. No book seems to capture better the natural human longing for freedom, equality, and dignity. While our primary task will be to understand the character and purpose of this great work, we will also reflect on Douglass’s career through his other great works and speeches.

Current undergraduate students in the Columbus area are invited to attend this intimate seminar led by Dr. Greg McBrayer.

Students will read and discuss:

  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave: Written by Himself (selections)
  • The Constitution and Slavery (March 16, 1849)
  • “Change of Opinion Announced” (May 23, 1851)
  • Speech on the Dred Scott Decision (May 1857)
  • “The Constitution of the United States: Is It Pro-Slavery or Anti-Slavery?” (March 26, 1860)
  • “Oration in Memory of Abraham Lincoln” (April 14, 1876)
  • “John Brown” (May 30, 1881)
